Cruise on the Douro, which one to do?

The Régua Pinhão cruise is the most popular with guests staying at the holiday home in Celorico de Basto, Casa do Penedo, which you can book here, but the most praised is the Régua to Barca D'Alva cruise - returning by train

This cruise on the Douro lasts all day and includes breakfast, lunch on board and return by train. It is a wonderful trip through the Douro, in which the mountain vineyards, World Heritage by UNESCO, stand out in stunning landscapes where wild nature prevails.

The highlights of this cruise on the Douro are the rise of the Régua, the Valeira and the Pocinho dams and the traditional Portuguese food served for lunch.

Returning by train allows you to enjoy one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world.

This cruise also operates only the Régua to Pocinho stretch, and continuing from Pocinho to Barca D'Alva is to enjoy the magnificent Douro in its fullness.

In order to enjoy a shorter cruise, we recommend one of the Régua Pinhão cruises, where you can enjoy the surrounding nature on the banks of the river and the oldest mountain vineyards in the demarcated port wine region.

The Régua Pinhão cruise includes a delicious lunch on board, a glass of Port wine and return on an unforgettable train trip between Pinhão and Régua, where you will be able to appreciate the famous tiles that exist in both these train stations.

Douro tour, which ones do we recommend?

Guests staying at the accommodation in Celorico de Basto, Casa do Penedo, which you can book here, usually take the Douro Tour by Jeep enjoying the fantastic landscapes of the Douro wine region.

On this tour, which includes a picnic lunch and a Port Wine tasting, the trip on the Douro is made in a 4x4 jeep along secondary roads in close proximity to nature, the magnificent nature surrounding environment and away from the bustle of tourists.

Another tour that we suggest is the one that departs from Régua and visits the beautiful city of Lamego, the historical and cultural center of the Douro Region.

During the journey in a private vehicle, guests at Casa do Penedo have the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, with its stunning tiles and monumental staircase.

Other places visited with the guide and detailed explanation are the beautiful Cathedral of Lamego, the fortified bridge, the tower of Ucanha, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas - a former male monastery of the Cistercian Order - and the Museum of Lamego, where are saved some of the Portuguese national treasures.

This tour to Lamego includes lunch at a local restaurant with a cozy atmosphere.

For Casa do Penedo guests who prefer a private tour of the Douro with a boat trip, a farm visit with wine tasting and an olive oil press with olive oil tasting, we recommend a more traditional tour with a guide that includes:

» Visit to a Port wine farm with wine tasting

» Visit to an olive oil mill with olive oil tasting

» Boat ride

» Traditional lunch with breathtaking views

» Walking tour in a wine farm

» Walk on an old railway bridge

Fisgas de Ermelo, when to take the trail?

The best time of year to take the Fisgas de Ermelo Trail usually coincides with the mild days of May and June, making the most of the sunlight to make a mountainous route of 12.4km.

In winter, the weather conditions are usually harsh, and in summer, the heat is intense and, exposure to the sun in the overwhelming majority of the trail, can cause burns and heat stroke, so there is nothing to facilitate the consumption of water and the use of sunscreen.

Located in the protected area of the Alvão Natural Park, the Fisgas de Ermelo is one of the largest natural waterfalls in Europe, with about 400 meters of unevenness.

The PR3 Fisgas de Ermelo pedestrian route, which begins and ends in Ermelo (where there is parking spaces), allows for a harmonious combination of outdoor activities with the beauty of the Alvão Natural Park and the privileged view of a waterfall approximately 500 million years old.
